Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common questions about our structural engineering and NDT services.

Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is the practice of implementing damage detection and characterization strategies for engineering structures. It involves the use of NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) tools like IR Thermography, Rebound Hammer, UPVT, and Moisture Meters to assess the condition of a building without causing damage. At Vasavi Infra Solutions, we provide comprehensive SHM services for residential, commercial, and industrial buildings.
UPVT (Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Test) as per IS 13311 (Part 1) is a non-destructive test that measures the velocity of an ultrasonic pulse transmitted through a concrete member. The pulse velocity depends on the elastic properties and density of the concrete. Higher pulse velocity indicates better quality concrete, while low velocity indicates internal defects, voids, or weak zones. It's used to assess concrete integrity, uniformity, and detect hidden cracks.
The duration of a building inspection depends on the size and scope. For a standard 3BHK flat (pre-handover or purchase inspection), the testing process typically takes 4–6 hours on-site. For larger buildings or comprehensive structural audits, it may require 1–2 full working days of site testing. The detailed inspection report is typically delivered within 48–72 hours after completing all the tests.
IR (Infrared) Thermography uses an infrared camera to detect temperature variations on surfaces. Moisture-affected areas have different thermal properties than dry areas, causing detectable temperature differences. During an inspection, cold spots (shown in blue/purple) on ceilings and walls typically indicate moisture or dampness. This allows our engineers to identify the exact location and extent of water infiltration without any destructive investigation — saving time and money for clients.
The best waterproofing system for a terrace depends on several factors: current condition of the terrace slab, existing treatment, slope, and budget. Common systems include: (1) Liquid Applied Membrane (PU/Polyurethane) — flexible, seamless, ideal for new terraces; (2) Torch-applied Modified Bituminous Membrane (APP/SBS) — durable for heavily trafficked terraces; (3) Hybrid systems (Crystalline + PU) — for existing terraces with moderate damage. Vasavi Infra recommends a site assessment before prescribing a system.
The Rebound Hammer (Schmidt Hammer) test as per IS 13311 (Part 2) measures the surface hardness of concrete, which correlates with its compressive strength. The hammer's plunger rebounds from the concrete surface — higher rebound numbers indicate harder, stronger concrete. Multiple readings per structural member are averaged and compared against calibration charts to estimate the in-situ compressive strength. It's widely used before repair, rehabilitation, or retrofitting work to assess existing concrete quality.
Yes! While our primary base of operations is Hyderabad and we are actively working across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, we are open to PAN India projects based on the scope and scale. For large-scale structural audits, rehabilitation projects, or PMC assignments, we can mobilize our team to any location in India. Please contact us to discuss your specific requirements and location.
The cost of a structural inspection varies based on the scope of work, size of the building, number of NDT tests required, and location. For a standard 3BHK flat pre-handover inspection with IR Thermography, Moisture Mapping, and Rebound Hammer tests, the cost is competitive and provides significantly higher value than the cost of undetected defects. Contact us for a customized quote — we'll assess your requirements and provide a transparent, itemized proposal.
All our structural work is executed in compliance with relevant Indian Standards including: IS 456 (Plain and Reinforced Concrete), IS 875 (Code of Practice for Design Loads), IS 1893 (Criteria for Earthquake Resistant Design), IS 13311 Part 1 & 2 (NDT of Concrete), NBC (National Building Code) guidelines, and relevant IS specifications for waterproofing materials and repair mortars. We also refer to ACI, ICRI, and CPWD guidelines where appropriate.
